Podcasting is a method of publishing audio broadcasts via the Internet, allowing users to subscribe to a feed of new files (usually in the .mp3 audio format). Podcasting is very distinct from other types of online media delivery because of its subscription model, which uses a feed (such as RSS or Atom) to deliver an enclosed file. Listeners may subscribe to feeds using “podcatching” software (a type of aggregator), which periodically checks for and downloads new content automatically. Some podcatching software is also able to synchronise (copy) podcasts to portable music players. Any digital audio player or computer with audio-playing software can play podcasts.
“Podcasting” is a combination the words “broadcasting” and “iPod.” The term can be misleading since neither podcasting nor listening to podcasts requires an iPod or any portable music player. Any digital audio player or computer with audio-playing software can play podcasts.
For more about Podcasting, see the Wikipedia article on Podcasting.
There are many podcasting software programs that are available free of charge. After you download and install the software, simply subscribe to the Civil Air Patrol Today podcast feed located at http://mdcap.org/captoday.xml. The podcasting software will automatically check for updates and download the files so you can listen to them at your computer or load them onto your MP3 player.
