12/27/2007—BCC squadron completes year at Vietnam Veterans Memorial
The Bethesda-Chevy Chase Composite Squadron (BCC) of the Maryland Wing Civil Air Patrol recently completed its first year as caretakers for the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, DC. Members wash and clean the memorial and its statues once a month from April through November.
12/19/2007—Maryland Wing supports Wreaths Across America
Civil Air Patrol Maryland Wing members joined together on December 15 to recognize America’s service members at events at cemeteries across the state and at the Arlington National Cemetery and U.S. Air Force Memorial during the annual Wreaths Across America activities.
12/14/2007—Fort McHenry squadron conducts 10th community blood drive
Continuing a community based program launched in June 2005, Fort McHenry Composite Squadron, Civil Air Patrol, held its tenth Catonsville Community Blood Drive the first weekend in November. With the 24 pints donated during November drive, the total for all ten drives has exceeded 275 pints.
12/10/2007—Group I members conduct training exercise
Members from Group I gathered together to conduct a tabletop search and rescue exercise at the Montgomery Senior Squadron headquarters in Gaithersburg, Md.
12/05/2007—Bowie Composite Squadron visits U.S. Air Force Memorial
To commemorate the anniversary of the Civil Air Patrol's founding, Maryland Wing's Bowie Composite Squadron visited the U.S. Air Force Memorial in Arlington, Va., where members participated in a wreath laying ceremony to honor those lost in the line of duty.
11/27/2007—WWII aircraft visit Carroll County during EAA Fly-In
Members of the Carroll Composite Squadron assisted the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) with their annual fly-in during the weekend, along with conducting orientation flights for cadet members. World War II aircraft were on display during the weekend along with experimental aircrafts of every kind.
11/20/2007—Howard squadron conducts weekend field training
Members of the Howard Composite participated in a field training exercise in early November. The weekend event trained members for future emergency services missions.
11/14/2007—Col. Henry "Ed" Phipps, CAP subchaser, passes on
Col. Henry "Ed" Phipps of Cockeysville, died Nov. 9. He was 93. Phipps joined CAP on the first day the organization was formed on Dec. 1, 1941. He flew subchaser missions out of Coastal Patrol Base 2 in Rehoboth Beach, Del.
11/13/2007—Three St. Mary's cadets earn Mitchell award
St. Mary’s Composite Squadron Civil Air Patrol cadets Peter C. Webster, Andrew J. Svecz, and Ryan C. DeGruy were recognized for the completion of a major cadet program milestone during a recent weekly squadron meeting.
10/31/2007—2007 Wing Conference brings training, awards
More than 260 officers, cadets, and guests met together during the 2007 annual conference and military ball, held in Hagerstown, Md., on October 26-28. Activities included training sessions, an awards luncheon, a cadet conference, masquerade dance, and military ball.
10/25/2007—Cadet change of command at Bowie squadron
During a recent open house, the Bowie Composite Squadron conducted a cadet change of command ceremony in which cadet Capt. Erich Welch assumed command of the cadet corps. In addition, the squadron commander, Jeff Welch, was promoted to the rank of captain by Lt. Col. Wes LaPre, Group III commander.
10/19/2007—Howard squadron assists farm museum
Members of the Howard Composite Squadron recently provided assistance to the Howard County Farm Museum during its three day annual show, held in West Friendship, Md.
10/10/2007—Maryland Wing Conference two weeks away
The annual Maryland Wing conference is two weeks away and will be held in Hagerstown, Md., at the Clarion Antietam Hotel and Conference Center on October 25-27. The conference will include 24 training sessions, along with a general session, the annual awards luncheon, and a Military Ball on Saturday.
09/28/2007—Brand becomes new cadet commander at St Mary's
Cadet Capt. Daniel A. Brand has assumed the position of cadet commander of the St. Mary’s Composite Squadron in the Maryland Wing of the US Civil Air Patrol (CAP). He relieves the outgoing cadet commander, cadet Capt. Matthew Herten, who had served in that position for the previous year.
09/23/2007—Maryland Wing drill team begins new season
The 2007-08 season for the Maryland Wing drill team began last week with a successful fundraiser and recruiting booth at the Baltimore Port Fest in Dundalk, Md. The Maryland Wing drill team was invited back for the second year in a row to be the only food vendor for the weekend, which saw over 1,000 visitors to the Port.
09/19/2007—Maryland Wing and West Viriginia Wing join for SAREX
Maryland and West Virginia Wings of the Civil Air Patrol (CAP) recently joined together in Salisbury, Md., for a joint search and rescue exercise designed to test the capabilities of mission staff and train CAP members to perform future missions.
09/17/2007—Carroll squadron has change of command for cadets
Cadet 2d Lt. Brandon Brooks became cadet commander of Civil Air Patrol’s Carroll Composite Squadron during a recent ceremony at the National Guard Armory in Westminster, Md.
09/10/2007—Maryland Wing signs agreement with Maryland Military Department
The Civil Air Patrol Maryland Wing joined the Maryland Military Department to formally sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) during a recent ceremony held at the Adjutant General's Office in Baltimore, Md.
09/08/2007—Cadet Advisory Council hosts summer picnic
The Maryland Wing Cadet Advisory Council (CAC) hosted its annual summer picnic by the water at Warfield Air National Guard base in Middle River, Md. Cadets and officers from around the Wing joined in for a day of food and fun.
09/04/2007—Bethesda-Chevy Chase gets new commander
Capt. Thomas Vineer assumed command of the Bethesda-Chevy Chase Composite Squadron (BCC) from Lt. Col. Eric Haertel during a traditional change of command ceremony in August at the Forest Oak Middle School gymnasium in Gaithersburg, Md.
08/28/2007—Group III Cadet Advisory Council elects new Chair
Cadet Capt. Erich Welch was recently elected as Chairperson of the Group III Cadet Advisory Council during a recent meeting, replacing Cadet Capt. Matt Herten, who accept ed the position of Maryland Wing Cadet Advisory Council Chair.
08/24/2007—Maryland Wing earns honors at CAP annual conference and National Board
During the recent U. S. Civil Air Patrol (CAP) annual conference and National Board meeting, the Maryland Wing was honored with several awards recognizing all three missions of CAP - emergency services, cadet programs, and aerospace education.
08/23/2007—Carroll squadron supports local 5K run
Members of the Carroll Composite Squadron joined other local organization during the annual Season of Change 5K run in Westminster, Md. Proceeds from the event go to support the Dove House at Carroll Hospice, the new inpatient facility that treats terminally ill patients.
08/22/2007—College Park squadron joins National Night Out
On the evening of August 7, members of Maryland Wing's College Park Composite Squadron met at Becket Field in New Carrollton and joined 34 million people across the nation in the annual National Night Out against crime.
08/20/2007—Working ambulance demonstrated to Martin squadron
The Glenn L. Martin Squadron witnessed a demonstration by the Essex Station of the Baltimore County Fire Department. EMTs Tim Rostkowski and Tearsa Rease demonstrated each piece of equipment packed in their emergency vehicle.
08/14/2007—Tri-Wing Encampment trains 160 cadet basics
More than 250 Civil Air Patrol (CAP) cadets and officers from nine wings and four regions from as far away as Nevada and Michigan came together for the annual Tri-Wing Encampment, held at Camp Fretterd Military Reservation in Reisterstown, Md., from July 28-August 5, 2007.
08/13/2007—St. Mary's cadet earns Frank G. Brewer Award
Cadet Lt. Col. David Trick, a member of the St. Mary's Composite Squadron, was awarded the Frank Brewer Award for Aerospace Education at the Civil Air Patrol National Conference held in Atlanta, Ga.
08/10/2007—Fort McHenry Squadron welcomes home deployed officer
1st Lt Larry Moore returned home to the Fort McHenry Composite Squadron after an 18-month deployment to Osan Air Force Base in Korea. Moore recently spoke to the squadron about his tour and his experiences flying while there.
08/08/2007—Command Change at St. Mary's Composite Squadron
Lt. Col. Tim Corrigan accepted command of the St. Mary's Composite Squadron during a recent ceremony, succeeding Capt. Allen Douglas. Lt. Col. Wes LaPre, Group III commander, officiated the command change.
08/06/2007—Maryland Wing hosts international cadets from Australia and Hong Kong
Maryland Wing hosted five international cadets for ten days as they toured Maryland and became acquainted with Civil Air Patrol. The cadets, from Australia and Hong Kong, were here as part of the annual International Air Cadet Exchange (IACE) program.
07/24/2007—Group III Squadron Leadership School graduates 10
Maryland Wing's Group III hosted a Squadron Leadership School recently in California, Md., during which 10 Civil Air Patrol officers learned about leadership and communication. Students from as far as New York Wing attended the course.
07/23/2007—Howard squadron celebrates July 4th in River Hill parade
Members of the Howard Composite Squadron marched in the Clarksville July 4th parade. Other members of the squadron participated by distributing items to the community as they walked along the parade route.
07/18/2007—Maryland Wing Solo School graduates six new pilots
Over the skies of Hagerstown, Md., six Maryland Wing cadets soloed in a Cessna 172 aircraft as part of their training during the 2007 Maryland Wing Solo School. The school, in its 17th year, annually trains six students , culminating in a solo flight and taking the FAA private pilots exam.
07/16/2007—Towson cadet inducted at U.S. Naval Academy
Miriam Feild, a cadet at the Towson Composite Squadron, was inducted into the U.S. Naval Academy Class of 2011. Feild selected the USNA after receiving appointments from three service academies.
07/09/2007—Unit Commander's Course graduates 9 students
Nine Civil Air Patrol officers recently graduated from the Unit Commander's Course, which was conducted at Camp Fretterd in Reisterstown at the end of June 2007. Students came from six Maryland Wing units and one Ohio Wing unit.
07/05/2007—Towson squadron honors members during awards ceremony
The Towson Composite Squadron recently hosted an awards ceremony during which both officers and cadet members were promoted and recognized for their recent achievements.
06/21/2007—2007 Maryland Wing conference set for Hagerstown
The 2007 Maryland Wing Conference will be held on Oct. 26-28 at the Clarion Antietam Hotel and Conference Center in Hagerstown, Md. This year's conference will feature a Military Ball on Saturday evening, in addition to a full day of training sessions and the annual awards luncheon.
06/19/2007—St. Mary's hosts British counterpart
Cadet Cory Williams, a member of the British Air Training Corps (ATC), recently visited the St. Mary's Composite Squadron, where he spoke to the squadron about the ATC and how it compares to the Civil Air Patrol.
06/13/2007—Middle East Region Staff College graduates 22 students
Twenty-two CAP officers graduated from the Middle East Region Staff College on Saturday, June 9. Students came from Delaware, Maryland, Washington, D.C. , West Virginia, Virginia, North Carolina,, South Carolina and New Jersey.
06/11/2007—Cadet training and service run in Knowles family
Cadet Rachel Knowles follows family tradition at the Bethesda-Chevy Chase Composite Squadron as she is awarded her Gen. Billy Mitchell Award. Knowles was promoted to the rank of cadet 2nd Lt. with the assistance of her parents at the squadron where both served as cadet commander in the 1970s.
06/09/2007—St. Mary's cadet receives Air Force Sergeants Association Award
Cadet 2nd Lt. Daniel Myers, of the St. Mary's Composite Squadron was recently named the squadron's cadet NCO of the Year and presented the Air Force Sergeants Association (AFSA) NCO of the Year award by Tech. Sgt. Nicole Culverhouse, USAF, during a recent squadron meeting.
06/07/2007—Spring safety blitz provides opportunity for fire safety class
During the month of May 2007, members of the Civil Air Patrol's Harford Composite Squadron completed fire extinguisher training as part of the the Middle Eastern Region's Spring Safety Blitz. The unit participated in a hands-on fire extinguisher training demonstration conducted by the Aberdeen Proving Ground's Fire Department.
06/06/2007—Mitchell Award presented to Carroll cadet
Cadet Brandon Brooks, a member of the Carroll Composite Squadron, was recently presented the Gen. Billy Mitchell Award and promoted to the rank of cadet 2nd lieutenant by Lt. Col. Christian Ready, commander of Group II of the Maryland Wing, and Capt. J. Kevin McHale, Carroll squadron commander.
06/04/2007—Whooping crane migration taught to local squadron
The Fort McHenry Composite Squadron recently hosted speakers from Operation Migration, a group that assists endangered whooping cranes relearn their seasonal migration routes with the use of ultralight aircraft.
06/01/2007—St. Mary's cadet earns flight scholarship
Cadet Lt. Col. Haley Blevins was awarded the Spaatz Association (TSA) Aerospace Leadership Scholarship during the TSA annual meeting in Washington, DC. Blevins is a member of the St. Mary's Composite Squadron of the Maryland Wing Civil Air Patrol.
05/30/2007—Civil Air Patrol represented in National Memorial Day Parade
Members from the Maryland Wing drill team and color guard represented the Civil Air Patrol during the 2007 National Memorial Day Parade, held annually in Washington, DC. One of nearly 170 units participating, they marched down Constitution Avenue from the Smithsonian to the White House.
05/29/2007—Bowie squadron marches on Memorial Day
More than 20 senior members and cadets in the Bowie Composite Squadron paid tribute to America's heroes at a Memorial Day parade.
05/29/2007—Maryland School for the Blind students learn about search and rescue
Lt. Col. John Knowles, Maryland Wing vice commander, recently spoke to students at the Maryland School for the Blind in Baltimore, Md. The students, as part of a mathematics program, were learning about search and rescue.
05/23/2007—Wicomico sends team to Team America Rocketry Challenge
The Wicomico Composite Squadron was the only CAP team nationally to be selected to compete in the 2007 Team America Rocketry Challenge, out of 690 entries.
05/17/2007—Maryland Wing develops Annual Training Plan
A high operations tempo is nothing new to the officers and cadets of the Maryland Wing, but a newly developed Annual Training Plan is allowing the wing to shape its operational and financial future.
05/16/2007—Aerospace education and promotions a good mix Fort McHenry squadron
The Fort McHenry Composite Squadron recently conducted several aerospace education activities and promotions. Guest speakers and field trips are among the events the squadron has used this spring to promote interest in aviation.
05/11/2007—Congressman on patrol over the Chesapeake
U.S. Representative Roscoe Bartlett, his Chief of Staff, and Mrs. Bartlett got a great view of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge and a whole lot more in a Civil Air Patrol glass cockpit Cessna 182 recently on a crystal clear spring day.
05/07/2007—Group III secures aircraft crash
Members from six units from Maryland Wing's Group III performed a site surveillance mission following the crash of N2600N, a single engine Piper Tomahawk. The mission began in the afternoon of Friday, 4 May 2007, and lasted through the early hours of Monday 7 May 2007.
05/02/2007—Harford squadron holds promotion and awards ceremony
Two members of the Harford Composite Squadron were recently recognized for achievements. Capt. Jeff Koubek completed the technician rating of the flight operations specialty track and 1st Lt. Bill Peters earned the Davis award and was promoted to the grade of captain.
04/30/2007—St. Mary's cadet receives Gen. Billy Mitchell award
Cadet Trent Miller was awarded the Gen. Billy Mitchell Award by Lt. Col. Wes LaPre, Group III commander, during a recent ceremony at the St. Mary's Composite Squadron in California. Md. Miller, a member since 2005, was promoted to the rank of cadet 2nd Lt.
04/23/2007—Middle East Region conference honors Maryland Wing members
Maryland Wing members were honored during the recent Middle East Region conference, held in Richmond, Va. Wing members and programs garnered six awards, including Senior Member of the Year, Cadet Programs Officer of the Year, and Public Affairs Officer of the Year.
04/20/2007—CAP assists at Barrie School Science Day
During Science Day at The Barrie School in Silver Spring, Md., school children were provided hands-on learning in model rocketry from 2nd Lt. Guilford Queen, a member of the Bethesda-Chevy Chase Composite Squadron.
04/17/2007—World War II veteran promoted to captain
The Glenn L. Martin Composite Squadron promotes Goff Cochran to the rank of captain. Cochran, a World War II veteran, has been a member of the squadron since 2004 and currently serves as the squadron's public affairs officer.
04/12/2007—St. Mary's squadron provides mission base for search and rescue exercise
Members from Group III gathered for a search and rescue exercise which was hosted by the St. Mary's Composite Squadron. Cadets and officers trained in statewide ground and air operations that stretched from St. Mary's to Ocean City, Md.
04/09/2007—Maryland Wing cadets excel at Speak Off
Cadets from around the state participate in the annual Maryland Wing Cadet Speak Off, a speech contest judged by the Toastmasters. This year, two cadets took top honors in three categories and will proceed to the Middle East Region Cadet Speak Off in April.

03/29/2007—Maryland Wing teams earn second place at Middle East Region Cadet Competition
The Maryland Wing drill team and color guard each placed second during the recent Middle East Region Cadet Competition, held at Fort Pickett, Va. Teams from the seven-wing Middle East Region joined for the simultaneous competitions.
03/26/2007—Glenn L. Martin squadron conducts winter survival training
Twenty-two members from the Glenn L. Martin Composite Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol conducted an activity packed weekend at Camp Cone learning and practicing winter survival skills.
03/22/2007—Fort McHenry squadron gets safety lesson
Members of the Fort McHenry Composite Squadron recently had a safety lesson in personal defense by senior member John Ralph, who spoke to the group about jujitsu.
03/20/2007—Two Carroll cadets earn Mitchell Award
The Carroll Composite Squadron awarded the Gen. Billy Mitchell Award to cadets Tyler Czarnowsky and Zachary Zaykoski during a recent ceremony in Westminster. Maj. Christian Ready, Maryland Wing Group 2 commander, made the presentation.
03/15/2007—BCC helps Parkland Middle School science night soar
The Bethesda-Chevy Chase Composite Squadron participated in a Family Science & Technology Night at the Parkland Magnet Middle School for Aerospace Education on February 27. The squadron provided hands-on flight simulator training as well as lectures to students.
03/12/2007—Maryland members join CAP members from around the nation on Capitol Hill for Legislative Day
Thirty members of the Maryland Wing joined members from around the nation on Capitol Hill during Legislative Day on March 1. Civil Air Patrol members met with their elected representatives to discuss issues affecting CAP.
03/06/2007—Harford cadet earns Ira C. Eaker Award
Cadet Elizabeth Peters from the Harford Composite Squadron of Maryland Wing was awarded the Ira C. Eaker Award recently during an awards presentation at her squadron. Col. Jerry Weiss, Maryland Wing commander, made the presentation.
03/04/2007—Mt. Airy cadets take the front seat at Group 1 O-flight event
Eleven cadets from the Mt. Airy Composite Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol took part in a Saturday full of aviation activities and exercises at Frederick Municipal Airport, on behalf of CAP pilots from Maryland Wing's Group 1. Powered orientation flights (o-flights) were scheduled throughout the day, while cadets participated in a ground school rotation.
02/11/2007—BCC wins color guard competition in tie breaker
The Bethesda-Chevy Chase Composite Squadron color guard won the 2007 Maryland Wing Color Guard Competition in a tie breaker, narrowly beating the Frederick Composite Squadron for the honor. Five teams participated in the annual competition which was held February 10 at Camp Fretterd, Md.
02/05/2007—Squadron Leadership School graduates 25 members
Squadron Leadership School (SLS) produced 25 graduates during the January course at Camp Fretterd. The course was hosted by Maryland WIng's Group II and was attended by members from all three groups and two wings.

Capt. Steven Solomon, MER director of Public Affairs, assists the military during the state funeral for President Ford as a member of the multi-service public affairs team that handled media relations at Andrews Air Force Base.
