Senate passes CAP Congressional Gold Medal bill by unanimous consent

A major step in the campaign to secure a Congressional Gold Medal recognizing Civil Air Patrol members� service to the country during World War II was taken today when the U.S. Senate unanimously approved S. 418, introduced by Sen. Tom Harkin, D-Iowa. �This legislation will offer long overdue recognition to a small group of people who answered the call to duty at our nation�s time of maximum danger,� Harkin, commander of CAP�s Congressional Squadron, told his colleagues during his floor statement. In the U.S. House of Representatives, where an identical measure, H.R. 719, is pending, well over half the 290 co-sponsors needed to guarantee passage have been secured. Additional co-sponsors are sought, and those interested in helping with the effort can contact can contact their congressional representative.

Maryland Wing cadet accepted to US Air Force Academy

Civil Air Patrol Maryland Wing Cadet Maj. John Rowan has been accepted to the United States Air Force Academy. Rowan, a cadet in the Calvert Cadet Squadron, will be a member of the class of 2016.

Members of the Maryland Wing have a unique opportunity this summer. The 2012 Civil Air Patrol National Conference is in Baltimore. Members can take advantage of the learning labs conducted Saturday, Aug. 25. Members will also be able to take advantage of a number of pre-conference activities. On Tuesday, Aug. 21 and Wednesday, Aug. 22, Civil Air Patrol will sponsor position specific training courses.

Two Baltimore Composite Squadron cadets experience first flight

On April 1 two cadets in the newest squadron in the Maryland Wing experienced their first orientation flight. The pilot, Captain James Holcomb, flew C/AB Rasul Jones and C/AB Khalil Stanley from Martin State Airport to Easton, Maryland and back, with a stop at Bay Bridge Airport.

Wing holds search and rescue exercise

The search and rescue exercise is part of Maryland Wing�s ongoing preparedness for actual emergencies. Six aircraft, five ground teams, and a total of 56 personnel took part in the exercise. Participants were given the opportunity to practice the skills necessary to conduct an actual search and rescue mission.
